✒️ The structure of the car generator

The car alternator is a combination of a direct current (DC) induction motor and an alternating current (AC) generator. But the main purpose is to generate AC. On the rotor of the car alternator, there is a coil that is responsible for generating DC, and at the same time acts as an electromagnet.

The main components that make up a car's generator

Important Note: There are no permanent magnets in the rotor of a car alternator. The coil responsible for generating DC will become an electromagnet when in operation.

Because the main purpose of a car alternator is to generate alternating current, it is also called a Car Alternator.

✒️ Car Alternator's activities

The kinetic energy of the car generated by the internal combustion engine will drive the rotor shaft.

When the rotor shaft rotates, a control voltage pulse, or starting voltage, is applied to the stator winding for a very short time to become an electromagnet. Then the Coil on the Rotor will generate DC based on the brush.

In many configurations with other versions, one battery supplies the two brushes with a starting voltage. And at the same time, the rotor winding becomes an electromagnet thanks to the starter battery. This is the most popular version.

The operation of the Car Alternator is no different from a basic AC generator, but the difference here is that the Rotor has no permanent magnets, but only a DC-driven electromagnet coil (which is supplied regularly during the process/operation program).

Exactly, the rotor and brush in the core of a car alternator is a DC electromagnet.

Investigating further, this Rotor and Brushes is also a DC induction motor.

Car generators do not use permanent magnets, because they want to reduce the electromotive force returning to the magnet, during start-up and operation.

Because of that, the car generator when removed from the car is not an ordinary AC generator. So we're looking to convert a car alternator into a permanent magnet generator.
