Automatic Voltage Regulator for Generator

What is Automatic Voltage Regulator?

Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is a system that automatically controls generator terminal voltage. Through the impact on the excitation system of the generator. To ensure that the voltage at the generator terminals is within the allowable limits.

So, you also understand why AVR is a very important part in generators. Just like the generator system, right? If AVR loses the ability to self-regulate voltage, then the quality of power supplied to electrical equipment will not be able to meet.

The AVR responds to the ordinal phase component of the generator voltage and is independent of frequency.

Today, the controller is usually built on digital microprocessor. Touch screen is connected for parameter setting, control algorithm and measurement values instantaneously. Some governors for large generators (>15MW) the controller can connect to the SCADA monitoring system in the factory to monitor real-time parameters, graphs of past performance (trrent) or events by generic or manufacturer-specific communication networks and protocols.

AVR function in generator

1. Voltage regulation function

The voltage regulator always monitors the generator output voltage. And compare it with a reference voltage. At the same time, the AVR must also give commands to increase or decrease the current. Excited so that the error between the measured voltage and the reference voltage is minimized.

When you want to change the generator voltage, you just need to change the reference voltage. Usually the generator reference voltage is reset to the rated value when the machine is operating independently, either busbar voltage, or mains voltage in grid-tied operation.

2. Ratio limit function: voltage/frequency

When an electric unit is started, at that time the rotation speed of the Roto is still low, the frequency of output will also be low. At this point, the AVR tends to increase the excitation current, so that the output voltage is as referenced to the set value or the mains voltage.

Normally, the generator speed needs to reach 95% of the rated speed. In addition, the automatic AVR must always monitor this ratio to adjust the excitation current accordingly. Although the generator voltage has not reached the reference voltage.

3. Function to compensate for voltage drop on the line

For those who are knowledgeable about generators, they probably know that when the machine is operated independently or connected to the grid with a large impedance. When we increase the load will cause voltage loss on the line. This voltage drop causes the voltage in the consuming apartments to decrease with the increase in load, reducing power quality.

Therefore, we want to reduce the harmful effects of the system caused by the generator operation. At that time, the AVR must predict the potential drop of the line. The voltage generation compensates for that drop. This compensating effect will help the voltage at a certain time, and between the generator and the consumer, to be stable under the load. The voltage at the consumer will decrease slightly compared to the load, while the voltage at the generator terminal will increase slightly compared to the load.

And to get this effect, manufacturers will have to add a current signal to the measuring circuit. Then, the 1-phase current from the secondary of the measuring current transformer will be flowed through a circuit R (resistor) and L (inductor). Generate voltage drops corresponding to the voltage drop across R and L of the line from the generator to the point where we want the voltage to stabilize.

However, this voltage level will be added to (or subtracted from) the measured generator terminal voltage. At that time, the automatic voltage regulator AVR will base on the total voltage to adjust the field current so that the total voltage remains constant.

Note: Actually the first part of the AC generator is the Alternator. Electricity is generated at the Alternator, and the AVR is connected to it. So this article also deals with the question: how to adjust voltage regulator on alternator?
